What to do with green tomatoes?
When frost threatens or has arrived and you have picked green tomatoes what do you do with them?
Tomatoes can be stored with the hope that they will ripen indoors. If properly stored you may be eating ripe tomatoes for weeks.
The easiest way for me has been to place newspaper on the floor in an unfinished (but not freezing) basement. Place the tomatoes on top of the newspaper – spacing them so none are touching – and placing another sheet of newspaper on top. This keeps the tomatoes cool but not freezing and keeps them in the dark. Check your tomatoes every other day and remove ripe or spoiled tomatoes immediately.
Another method is to wrap each tomato in newspaper.
